In addition to directing a trilogy, Gareth Edwards will return to write and produce the sequel. Edwards quit the project in May 2016. A new script was commissioned in October 2016 by Dougherty and Shields. Dougherty became the director in January 2017. Principal photography started in June 2017 and ended in September 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia Exec producer Yoshimitsu Banno (Godzilla vs. Hedorah) and original Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima died in 2017.

Paleobiologist Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison, who work for the Titan-studying group Monarch five years after the existence of the "Titans" was made public, witness the hatching of a larva dubbed Mothra. This is done by employing the "Orca," gadget, which emits frequencies that entice or change Titan behavior. Emma and Madison are kidnapped by a squad of eco-terrorists commanded by former British Army Colonel Alan Jonah. Mothra escapes and pupates beneath a neighboring waterfall at the same time.

They ask Dr. Mark Russell, who used to work for Monarch and is now Emma's ex-husband and Madison's father, to help them find Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham. Mark doesn't want to do this at first because he doesn't like Godzilla, who he blames for the death of his son during the events in San Francisco. He eventually agrees, though. They follow Godzilla to Antarctica, where Jonah wants to free a Titan with three heads called "Monster Zero." Emma frees and awakens Monster Zero, who fights Godzilla, eats Graham, and flees. Soon after that, the team finds out that Emma is working for the terrorists. When Emma calls Monarch, she says that the Titans must be awakened in order to heal the Earth from the damage humans have done.

Emma wakes up Rodan in Mexico, and the Monarch team tries to get it to go to Monster Zero. Godzilla attacks Monster Zero after Rodan is defeated, and he cuts off his left head. During the fight, the U.S. Navy fires a weapon called the "Oxygen Destroyer," which appears to kill Godzilla. Monster Zero grows back his lost head and wakes up all the Titans that have been dormant around the world, with Rodan giving in to his rule. In the end, Madison doesn't want to be with Emma.

King Ghidorah, a prehistoric alien, is discovered by Dr. Ilene Chen through the study of mythological texts. It is Mothra's mission to contact Godzilla, who is recovering in an old undersea metropolis, from Monarch's Bermuda headquarters. The gang discovers Godzilla's lair on a radioactive submarine. As a result, they plan to explode a nuclear weapon in order to hasten Godzilla's recovery. In order to save Godzilla, Serizawa sacrifices himself by detonating the warhead himself.

Jonah dismisses Emma's efforts to stop Ghidorah and the other Titans from destroying the Earth. Madison overhears and takes the Orca. When Madison arrives at Fenway Park, she unintentionally transmits a frequency that soothes the Titans. Ghidorah destroys the Orca in Boston. Godzilla arrives to fight him with help from Monarch. Because Godzilla's radiation levels are rising, Mark organizes a team to rescue Madison and flee the city before it's too late. To rescue Godzilla, Mothra comes, but is caught by Rodan. She beats him, but is damaged.

It was announced in April 2015 that Aaron Taylor-Johnson would not be returning to reprise his role in the sequel and that his participation was contingent on the choice of co-star Emily Edwards. Legendary Pictures announced in October 2015 that Godzilla and Kong will face off in a picture named Godzilla vs. Kong, which was scheduled for release in 2020. With "centered around Monarch" Legendary is building a shared film series to unite Godzilla and King Kong with "brings together Godzilla and ... King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new."

needed to get on with things Edwards said he would like to work on Godzilla again at some point.

Dougherty was confirmed as director in January 2017. Dougherty said he was originally asked to direct before asked to rewrite the screenplay. Dougherty's reply to being approached to direct was: "Yes. That was my immediate reply. I was pleased and honored, and I still am. It was like a dream. And stress. Huge, huge pressure."

Legendary's only job was to include Monarch, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in the movie. For Dougherty's script, he and his team had to start over from the beginning again. First, Dougherty made a rough two-page treatment that had some simple lines and rough sketches of the people who were in it. Following that, Dougherty and co-writer/executive producer Zach Shields set up a writer's room. Borenstein was also there. Ten people worked together to improve the treatment. The script took a year to write.

Dougherty also rewrote and re-recorded a number of lines throughout the production process and in the editing phase. For him, the most difficult part of writing this novel was making sure that "while still creating a story with human characters that we care about." Dougherty decided to make a movie on Monarch instead of Ford because he saw a chance to portray the organization as a band of heroes in the last film. This resulted in the picture being an ensemble piece as a result.

Dougherty and Shields created a human narrative line that could stand alone without the monsters and substitute science fiction aspects with issues like climate change or eco-terrorism. As many of the human and monster narrative threads merged, Dougherty believed the third act was the most difficult to write for. Emma's speech to Monarch was rewritten multiple times, according to Shields It was Shields and Dougherty's intention for the speech to ask the audience to trust mankind or Mother Nature.

Kyle's loss of faith in the beginning, and finding it in this moment when he realizes, you know, God is dead. Shields said, referring to Godzilla and Mark's characters. Full sequences of the non-Toho Titans rising after Ghidorah's call were written in Dougherty and Shields' treatment and early drafts but later trimmed due to budgetary concerns in the final version To begin with, Borenstein planned to include Mechagodzilla in the picture. At some point in his writing process, Dougherty decided to drop the character.

On-screen monsters are referred to as "MUTOs" rather than "Titans". A heavenly presence and feeling of devotion were Dougherty's goals for the monsters "It's like you want to construct a deity out of these things. It can't be merely gigantic dinosaurs. Jurassic Park covered that. It must be distinct. They must be unique. It's Titans." They were to "distill those silhouettes and those key traits into something more modern." the director directed the designers. "very large animals with a distinct thought process." the filmmaker emphasized.

It would be great if Dougherty could get "God in Godzilla" back for Godzilla. They came up with a design that he liked, but he wanted to make it better by adding the 1954 version's dorsal plates and making its claws and feet bigger so it looked like a more powerful predator. In order to make Godzilla's roar sound more like that of the 1954 version, the director asked the sound design team to make it sound more like the roars from that movie "It looks like they did a good job with the roar of Godzilla in the first movie. In order to make it even more like the original (1954) version, I pushed them a little bit further, but not too far."

Dougherty looked into different moth species and found that some looked "scary" and "predatory" The way he wanted to make Mothra look realistic was to make an insectoid, huge creature that looked real from every angle, and especially when it was moving. He didn't want Mothra to look like a moth that had been blown up. Legacy Effects came up with the design for Mothra.

The director urged the design team to keep an Eastern dragon influence for Ghidorah and to avoid any Western dragon influence, adding, "They're not classic western dragons. So that was the plan from the start... We don't want it to resemble a dragon." Ghidorah's design came from Legacy Effects. Dougherty compared Ghidorah to Rip Van Winkle, a character with a sense of curiosity and cruelty. "not part of the natural order." said producer Alex Garcia.

Dougherty said that the movie would have new monsters that weren't made by Toho. It was revealed that the names of the non-Toho Titans are Baphomet, Typhoon, Abaddon, Bunyip, Methuselah, Behemoth, Scylla, Tyra, Mokele, and Mbembe. He did this because he thought it was part of the "Toho tradition" to keep adding new monsters to the Godzilla family tree. Dougherty had hoped that Legendary would get other monsters from Toho, like Anguirus, Biollante, and Gigan, but that didn't happen. However, the film's budget kept them from getting more Toho characters.

For the roars, the director thought it was important to "getting the noises right." They started from there. He gave them a "super cut" of the monster roars from the Shwa Godzilla movies, and they started from there. He said that the monsters would have new roars that would sound like the original ones. Dougherty put the Shwa roars on a huge speaker system that actors could use on set when they had to run away from or react to the monsters in the movie, like when they saw them.

The film came out on August 13th in digital HD and on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on August 27th. In addition to HDR10 and HDR10+, the 4K release includes a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Best Buy offered a 4K UHD Combo steelbook exclusively for its store. VideoScan First Alert ranked the film's home media release at #1. US and Canadian DVD sales totaled $36.1 million, with $12.6 million coming from DVD and $23.5 from Blu-ray.

IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX, and ScreenX formats of Godzilla: King of the Monsters were released by Warner Bros. Pictures on May 31, 2019, except in Japan where it was distributed by Toho. Originally set for release on June 8, 2018, the film has been postponed. But it was delayed twice, the first time to March 22, 2019, then to today.

A VIP press screening was hosted on May 17 at the AMC Century City in Los Angeles for members of the media in advance of the film's release on May 24, 2019.

As a result, Monarch is able to get in touch with Emma, who is eager to assist Jonah in his mission to release the Titans. Since the Titans saw themselves as legitimate rulers of the earth, they may help restore the planet's ecological equilibrium that has been mostly destroyed by mankind. Mark believes she is doing this to get revenge on him for the loss of Andrew.

Emma and Jonah fly to Mexico to rescue another Titan. The city begins to be evacuated as a result of the disaster. They make their way to an active volcano to release Rodan, “the Fire Demon”. In the midst of Monarch's squadron of fighter pilots, he emerges. Some of the pilots are devoured by the winged beast, but they are no match for it, as he barrel-rolls through the air and finishes the rest.

Ghidorah travels to the volcano's summit to regrow his head. His cry wakes the rest of the Titans. In reaction, the Titans wreak havoc and ruin on their territories, killing countless people. Rodan even bows to Ghidorah's leadership since, as Monarch points out, Ghidorah has established himself as the Titans' alpha.

Mothra, who has been cocooned beneath a waterfall, emerges with luminous wings and flies for Godzilla, who is alive but weakened and healing underwater. Mothra and Godzilla are spotted by Monarch as they communicate with each other. Mothra and Godzilla "have a thing," as Barnes puts it, and the crew agrees with him. He was one of the Titans most feared and would confront Godzilla for power, according to Ilene's research from historical texts. "

Mark, Serizawa, Ilene, and Coleman set off for Godzilla's location with the intention of reviving him, however it is mentioned that the healing process might take years to properly restore him to his former glory. They have discovered that because radiation-loving titans like Godzilla thrive, they can use a nuclear weapon to repair him more quickly. The sub's weapons systems have been severely damaged, so Serizawa decides to detonate the nuclear device personally. It is the closest he has ever been to Godzilla, and he says goodbye to his comrades. His last act of self-sacrifice is to pat a barely awake Godzilla before detonating the nuclear and saying his goodbyes to him. Big G's atomic breath is fired into the sky soon, and he emerges even more strong than ever.

Emma has noticed that Ghidorah is guiding the Titans to wreak greater damage than she intended. Even Madison has blasted her mom out for it, calling her a monster. Emma informs Jonah that because Fenway Park and much of Boston has been evacuated, they can use the Orca to broadcast a frequency through there, but Jonah turns his back on Emma. Madison grabs the Orca and travels to Fenway Park herself, putting out the frequency that is powerful enough to draw the Titans to that place. Ghidorah comes, as does Godzilla, and they proceed to rampage in their last fight throughout the city while Madison heads for safety.

For this conflict, mankind is as much a part of it as the Titans are, Mark tells the Monarch crew. A powerful nuclear pulse is emitted by Godzilla, and they expect him to go off at any moment. Mark ventures into the city in search of Madison, and along the way he meets Emma, who has fled Jonah in an attempt to save her own child. To their surprise, they discover Madison beneath the ruins of their former house asleep but alive.

During the credits, we see newspaper articles reporting the discovery of a Mothra egg (meaning she can return). We see other cave paintings, including one in which Godzilla confronts the world’s second most well-known Titan…KONG.

After the credits, on Isla De Mara, Jonah and his men pursue a guy who presents them with one of Ghidorah’s heads. For an unclear reason, Jonah claims he intends to steal it.

Things are being set up for Godzilla to fight Kong while a Mothra egg is found. Jonah, on the other hand, gets one of Ghidorah's heads to use as a test.
